Charismatic People Skills: Integrity is Key!

When we think of charismatic people skills, we often picture people who read others well. Then they interact with that insight. Some see that as a positive. Others see it is manipulation. Well it all depends on what is in the charismatic person’s heart and mind. What is their purpose? Why are they doing it?

Charismatic People Skills: Integrity Shapes Everything

Let’s apply that standard to ourselves. What is in our hearts? We can use charismatic people skills for the good of everyone or for selfish manipulation.

Do we care as much about others as we do for ourselves? Are our thoughts and actions based on generous win/win values?

    Charismatic People Skills: Actions Checklist

  1. Do we live up to our promises even when things go wrong?

  2. Do we stand behind what we sell and make good even when it costs us more? Using charismatic people skills to sell and then disappearing is manipulation and lack of integrity.

  3. Do we accept responsibility for trouble we create and offer a sincere apology? Or do we sidestep and offer excuses? People’s trust is a gift they give us. Our sincere apology and accountability is the gift of integrity we give them in return.

  4. Charismatic People Skills: Leaders & Teammates Actions Checklist

  5. Leaders and managers, are you honoring employees’ needs as well as the organization’s goals? Using charismatic people skills to inspire and engage employees is positive. Using people only for maximum profit is manipulation. Here are the small steps of integrity that make a huge difference. Remember you serve those you lead.

  6. Employees, do you contribute fully and carry your share of the load to honor your co-workers and teammates? Or do you talk big but then show up late, make excuses, and do very little?

As The People Skills Coach™, I often hear people saying that charisma is manipulation. They see only the dark side. In truth, charismatic people skills often inspire and uplift others. They reach out and build bonds of happiness and success. It all depends on what’s behind those charismatic people skills — altruism or narcissism?

Thank you Cynthia. It’s a topic that continues to plague many people as they see only the negative side of charismatic people skills. I hope this post makes a difference!

  2. Alli Polin says:

I don’t think that using your charisma is manipulation. Influence does start and end with integrity as you so well explained. When you lead with others best interests, it’s not manipulation when you have charisma – it’s who you are! There are people we’re drawn to and sometimes can’t explain why. It’s not because of manipulation but how they make us feel about ourselves. Good questions for self-reflection here. Will definitely share!

      Hi Alli,
I think that integrity prevents people from using their charisma to manipulate. It’s a very debated topic. SO many people are wary of charisma because they think people will manipulate them by making them feel good. I say, always use multiple senses to assess others whether they have charisma not not!

Many thanks for weighing in on this hot topic.
