Are You a Curious Risk-Taking Learner? | #Career #LifeLongLearning

Are you a risk taker or a curious risk-taking learner? Perhaps you are not sure of the difference! Well people often think of risk takers as physical risk takers (i.e. skydiving, bungee jumping, etc…) To those activities, you say no! Yet, you may well be a curious risk-taking learner and that will propel you toward all types of wonderful career opportunities.

Curious Risk-Taking Learners

When people find out I left a good-paying corporate job to start my own business 30 years ago, so many of them say, “Oh, you’re a risk taker.” Close friends and family don’t see me that way. They do see me as a curious life-long learner and I agree with them. You may be one as well. Here’s a checklist to help you figure it out!

Do you …

  1. Wonder about many different things? How things work? Who invented everyday things we rely on? What makes people behave the way they do?

  2. Look up new words you hear shortly after you hear them?

  3. Find solutions to everyday challenges at home or at work? Tinker w/ ordinary objects and use them for other purposes?

  4. Have the feeling there is so much more to try in life? (e.g. Careers, places to live, people to meet, discoveries to make?}

  5. Admire people who are curious learners or do you think they are weird and very annoying?

The Risk of Curious Risk-Taking Learners

Exactly what are the risks of being a curious learner? Others see you as different and sometimes pull away. They may misinterpret your constant learning as being snobby even though it isn’t. If your bosses are insecure, they may wonder if you will make them obsolete even though you have no such intention. Being curious may propel you to try new jobs or opportunities and that feels risky to many people. Still, all of these risks are manageable. Moreover, the rewards of being a curious risk-taking learner are many!

Rewards of Being a Curious Risk-Taking Learner

  • Curiosity makes every day exciting. You will never here a curious person say they are bored. Curiosity makes life interesting!

  • If you have children, you will enjoy their development with less stress and more joy. Children’s curiosity is inborn. They have so much to learn, develop, and master. Enjoy their journey as yours.

  • Employers will find you very valuable. You will be building your knowledge and skills every day.

  1. Love this, Kate. Yes, curiosity makes life far more interesting. I love to learn and grow, and it helps me in so many areas but also feels good in and of itself.
