Leadership: Endings Transitions Beginnings – Which Do You Prefer?
by Kate Nasser | Leave a comment »
Because leaders are always leading change, they need to know which phase they prefer — endings transitions beginnings. These phases, proposed by William Bridges, Ph.D., seem backwards to some leaders. Yet this order is a true picture of what happens to those you lead. So my question to you as leaders is, which phase do you prefer? Here’s why it is important for you to be self-aware when leading change and leading morale. Endings Transitions Beginnings: Which Do You Prefer?

If you love change and leading change, you may prefer the beginnings phase. You get excited even thinking about creating something new! Your challenge will be to understand why those you lead aren’t as excited as you. In fact, they may resist the change and your leadership because they don’t like endings. Perhaps their previous leader or they themselves help create what you are going to end and change.
-
Likewise, you may not understand those who are stuck in the transition phase. You think they are dragging their heels and it frustrates you! Well, ask yourself have you provided them with a clear transition plan? Does it outline the impact on them? Will they still have the same job? Will they have any job there? Moreover, if you are leading a support services team, will they be retrained to support the new way or will they have to wing it? What’s the timetable? Don’t let your excitement overlook the details.
-
Lastly, if you put too much focus and time on endings, (because you are unsure of the change yourself), you may never lead the employees to implement the change. You may also lose the respect of driver types who are excited about the change.
