Why Capture the Employee Experience *During Crisis

  • Doing so shows employees that they matter. As leaders and employees address the crisis itself, great leaders show they care about the employees.

  • It helps make employees more aware of their own reactions to crises. Awareness is the first step to managing their own feelings and behavior and their interactions with each other.

  • It is a rare learning opportunity for leaders. You will learn things about your employees (and how to lead them) that you won’t learn from any other moment. Moreover it is a treasure trove of insights for crafting a better employee experience overall.

How to Capture Employee Experience *During Crisis

  1. Ask employees to keep a casual journal. Don’t force them to do this nor make it too structured. Simply suggest and invite them to write down a few thoughts each day about what they are experiencing *during the crisis. Real-time notes are far more accurate then trying to remember after the fact.

  2. Listen. Whether they share these thoughts with you at the end of each week or when the crisis is completely over, hear what they are saying. Be open-minded. Don’t judge and don’t get defensive. This is a rare learning opportunity that can help you lead morale and help your company become truly employee-centric.

What do you think are some of the insights you will learn from them?
