Traditional steps for leaders to be leadership role models had much to do with a fixed definition of leadership. Not surprisingly, that definition has changed as new generations entered the workforce. Here are the overlooked yet essential steps for being leadership role models today.

Previous standards for leaders to be leadership role models were: be authoritative, be respectable, be fair. Since that was the definition of a good leader, the role modeling was just as straightforward. However, today leadership is about connection and discovery to ignite the best results.

Get to know those you lead. What do they expect of you as leader?

Connect to them. To inspire them, you must connect to them.

Discover their natural talents that advance the team’s success. Activate their voices so they know they matter! Knowing they belong and matter is essential for them to see you as a role model today.

Applaud their efforts and contributions. Remember, great leadership role models lead morale!

Ignite continuous learning. Routine work, once set in action, can happen on its own. Yet, it get’s boring. Today’s employees want to develop and learn. Be the conduit to that.
Get Into the Change
Leaders, don’t overlook these essential steps to being great leadership role models today. If leaders don’t get into the changes of time, they become obsolete. Moreover, they don’t lead morale nor become role models for tomorrow. Embrace the essential steps noted above and watch your own career and life grow as well.
