Morale and spirit matters. Team members do not work better when they are demoralized or afraid. Inspire them with recognition of what is going well.

Team members will then take that recognition and work to improve further. Leaders and managers, give up your belief that highlighting what is going well is a waste of time. Replace the myth that praise makes people complacent with the truth that praise and morale are motivators.

At some point, engage team members to highlight what the team and each other are doing well. When they begin to own the team’s success, they will take daily steps to create and preserve it.

You and the team can discuss how to spot weaknesses along the way. Moreover, dig in to what steps they should take to resolve those weaknesses. This is very important. Human interaction issues may pop up and you will need to guide them on appropriate actions.

Lastly, as this culture of leading team strengths develops, help the team to establish ways to review it regularly and include it in onboarding of new team members.

If you are still doubtful about the value of morale and leading team strengths, find time to make a list of all the thoughts you have about it. As you right them down, don’t analyze the thoughts. It often shows leaders what their true block is about leading morale.
