Are You Overworking

If your body, your mind, and closest loved ones are telling you that you are working too hard, figure out why you are doing this. Overwork will take its toll on you in the form of burnout, health issues, relationship/family trouble, and your overall well-being.

Essential & Subconscious Reasons for Overworking?

    Essential/Common Reasons

  1. To make ends meet. With your skill set, one nine to five job doesn’t pay the bills for you and your loved ones. So you work very long hours or multiple jobs. This says a great deal about your integrity. Still, take a bit of time to see how you and your family are spending money. There may be ways to make it without you damaging your health along the way.

  2. You are working and going to school (to get a better job.) Make sure you put some focus on your health along the way. Otherwise, you may be unable to take advantage of that degree after you finish! Even a ten minute daily meditation to relax can be of great value.

  3. Societal culture or your company and boss expect it. You don’t want to be seen as a slacker so you yield to the pressure to overwork. Well, the good news is that the younger generations in the workforce now are changing that culture. There are companies that focus on quality of life as well as productivity at work. In other words, you can achieve without overworking. A big thank you to millennials and GEN Z for effecting this shift!

  4. Subconscious Reasons

  5. Perhaps you are avoiding a difficult situation in your personal life. So, you throw yourself into work and deny the trouble in your life. You will likely end up with two problems — the difficult one you don’t want to face AND bad health. Avoidance won’t change anything. Consider getting some counselling on how to face the trouble in your life.

  6. You are your work. Work has become who your life and you love it. OK but what will you do when you retire? It may seem like a long way off yet most everyone will tell you it creeps up quickly. Ask yourself, what other needs do I have in my life now that I have not admitted? Or perhaps you’ve admitted them and failed at getting what you want. In that case, the work that you love is an escape. Be careful. You matter and deserve relaxation time, friendships, and human care and love right now.

Summary

You don’t have to wait until you are burned out, or in ill-health, or even retired to make your mental and physical health a priority. Resist the pressure to overwork. Make time to laugh, be with friends and family, do a hobby you love, go for a short walk every day, use a daily meditation app, relax with a good movie or book etc… Make your today better with small actions of self-care.
