When you think of teamwork weaknesses, what jumps to your mind? There are the standard images of some teammates not contributing and not being accountable. Yet because these are so visible, they are easier to address. Here are some subtle actions that you may be doing that make it difficult for others to be teammates with you. Check this list to prevent teamwork weaknesses.
Teamwork Weaknesses You May Be Creating
Are you creating teamwork weaknesses & making teamwork difficult? Checklist from Kate Nasser The People Skills Coach™, Author, Leading Morale
-
Being a maverick. You contribute BUT you march to your own drummer. So how can others even think you are a teammate? Be authentic while being a team player.
-
Expecting everyone to be like you. This opposite of #1 is definitely one of the hidden teamwork weaknesses. In strong teamwork, teammates recognize the differences and find the fit.
-
Being two-faced. Saying one thing and doing another undermines trust and weakens teamwork. This is especially true when you bad-mouth someone behind their back. The other person not only mistrusts you; they also wonder if you are part of a clique.
-
Not communicating. Teamwork requires clear, timely, and frequent communication. With hybrid and virtual teams, this is even a bigger challenge. How well do you communicate — verbally and in writing? Do you consider the deadlines that others may be under as they wait for your reply?
-
Blaming. Blaming those teammates that may not be as skilled as you are right now is a teamwork killer. Blaming weakens teamwork. Mentoring strengthens it. Share your knowledge if you want others to be as skilled as you.
-
Hoarding knowledge. Refusing to share you knowledge screams mistrust. This truly undermines a team. What are you scared of? Do you think your only value is your current knowledge? Do you believe sharing it will put your job at risk? It is more likely that you will be seen as a non-team player and replaced.
In a Nutshell
To maintain great teamwork, teams and leaders need to assess teamwork maintenance behaviors — especially those in the list above. It will prevent team weaknesses from developing under the radar and surprising you. Moreover, create a list of great teamwork behaviors. It can help guide this entire process. (P.S. Make sure you share it with new hires during orientation.)
Your Turn: What would you add to the checklist above?
